Sun Protection for Eyes
in the Low Country

Living in the beautiful low country indeed poses a heightened risk of developing specific eye conditions due to exposure to ultraviolet rays. Without adequate eye protection such as sunglasses and hats, individuals are more susceptible for conditions such as,

  • Macular Degeneration, a serious disease which can impair central vision.

  • Pterygium, also known as Surfer's Eye, is characterized by redness, irritation, and blurry vision. Dr. Nemeth frequently observes Pterygium growths in individuals exposed to dust, wind, and UV rays through occupations like those found in the construction and landscaping industries. Treatment involves reducing exposure, with severe cases potentially requiring surgical intervention.

  • Cataracts too can be a result of an excessive amount of time spent in the sun without protection from damaging UV rays. Typically a condition that presents in people over the age of 60, prolonged time in the sun can make you a candidate for this condition in earlier years.
